Gianni Infantino has opened the door to further winter World Cups and global club championships, stating that the sport should remain open to new ideas about moving big events from the summer period.
Discussions are under way about the schedule beyond 2030, a major sticking point due to growing pressure from enlarged events. The global body established a task force to analyze the situation, and the global governing body has caused complications by granting the 2034 tournament to Saudi Arabia. That tournament will almost certainly be held during winter months, following the Qatar model. The president proposed soccer must become accustomed to untying itself from the European summer.
“We're thoroughly examining specifics, we're constantly talking,” he said. “The discussion extends beyond one event, it involves wider thinking. Even when playing in parts of Europe summer months can be extremely warm.”
Infantino was speaking on the sidelines of the European club organization annual meeting in Rome. He had expressed similar sentiments to numerous participants, saying: “We must consider the globalisation of the worldwide football schedule.” He cited October and March as “times when worldwide competition is feasible.”
This significant overhaul would cause ructions, even as FIFA's power to carry out its plans might face obstacles if a formal complaint regarding the calendar implementation, submitted to European authorities last year by European Leagues, leads to proceedings being opened.
The governing body is considering methods to enlarge the Club World Cup. A larger tournament setup could be implemented next time, possibly including entry tournaments that whittles the final number down to thirty-two participants. The president referenced grand schemes in his conference presentation, stating the organization would “endeavor to find ways we can make this event bigger, improved further, more significant.”
Spain and Morocco are frontrunners to stage the 2029 event, scheduled to occur in the summer, although other contenders remain under evaluation. An early revisit to the US is possible and reports indicate the Asian nation, which was scheduled to host the tournament in 2021 prior to coronavirus, continues to show interest.
FIFA is considering holding the Club World Cup every two years following 2029. The Gulf state leads the race to stage the 2031 tournament, a scenario that might prove more straightforward if Infantino's favored rejig are implemented considering cold-weather timing would be inevitable.
The president stated any permanent shift towards organizing national league matches overseas would be a “big risk”. Ongoing circumstances saw approval given for matches in the US and Australia, noting this permission came on an exceptional basis. The governing body's approval represents a procedural step, yet Infantino seemed to imply the idea caused discomfort.
“Our system includes whereby we have games within countries, continental level and global level,” he elaborated. “This system that made football the No 1 sport globally. Should we dismantle this structure, we gamble significantly.”
As part of other changes at the conference, came the announcement of the Spanish team's reinstatement to the fold, foreshadowed earlier by the club president attending at the formal event. The team exited the group post the unsuccessful breakaway league in recent years, which they championed with other major clubs.
The EFC president the football executive commented lightheartedly about the restored connection became formal during an amicable discussion. This return seems to to reduce chances on any return of the Super League scheme.
