The first scheduled flight of 2026, designed to send back asylum seekers who came in the UK via dinghies has been cancelled, it has been learned.
Detainees selected for the UK's 'one in, one out' initiative and who held boarding passes for a Wednesday morning flight were informed that their removal had been halted.
"I arrived on a vessel with approximately eighty individuals onboard," said one detainee whose ticket was scrapped. "Ten of us were taken into custody, while seventy others were taken to hotels to have their claims assessed here. That doesn't seem fair. I was delighted when our flight were cancelled, but the guards would not provide a explanation. When I inquired, they responded, 'we can't tell you why.'"
This is believed to be the initial occasion a returns removal specially arranged plane has been grounded, though it is not thought to be a result of legal action.
The charter's cancellation comes after the circulation of a document on Monday, prepared by around 80 detainees held in an immigration removal centre near Heathrow airport.
The report highlights grievances that while the majority of those who arrive on dinghies are having their applications considered within the UK, a smaller group has been held and given deportation orders. The men reportedly view their detention as "unjust and prejudicial."
The report states: "We are not considered criminals. We are individuals who fled conflict, persecution, and hardship. We came to the UK with faith in fundamental freedoms, freedom, and protection. In contrast, we are confined, isolated, and silenced."
When a deportation charter is cancelled at short notice, the authorities may face penalty fees amounting to tens of thousands of sterling to the aircraft leasing company. The exact arrangements for UK to France deportation charters are not publicly known.
Based on information familiar with such operations, the typical expense for a single removal flight is around £250,000.
Earlier figures published for 2022 indicated the average cost was about £180,000, with costs varying based on the type of aircraft, route, and other factors.
A representative said: "As a matter of a longstanding government policy to not comment on specific procedures."
